Buybacks

API Enterprise

Region-wide executed share buybacks over a period-date window. One request returns every filed quarter of repurchase activity, for every listing in the requested region, whose fiscal quarter ends inside the window — the same rows the single-stock buybacks endpoint serves, without a per-ticker fan-out.

This API returns what a company actually spent repurchasing its own stock, per fiscal quarter, together with the number of shares repurchased and how much repurchase authorization remains. Figures are read from the company's own filings.

This is executed activity, not an announcement. A buyback authorization is a statement of intent, and a large share of announced programmes are never fully executed, so a company with a large announced programme may appear here with little or no spend. Announced programmes are served by the Corporate Actions events endpoint.

Built for enterprise consumers: the response is uncharged (no credits), and every row carries the full instrument-identity block so it can be joined straight onto your own security master.

Available Data Points:

  • Company: The name of the company issuing the security.
  • Ticker: The ticker symbol associated with the security.
  • Operating MIC: The operating Market Identifier Code of the security.
  • MIC: The Market Identifier Code (MIC) for the traded security.
  • ISIN: The International Securities Identification Number for the security.
  • FIGI: The Financial Instrument Global Identifier.
  • Share Class FIGI: The Financial Instrument Global Identifier for the share class.
  • Ortex Company ID: Unique id for a company.
  • Ortex Security ID: Unique id for a security issued by a company.
  • Ortex Tradable item ID: Unique id for a listing of a security.
  • Ortex Tradable item main indicator: Indicates if the trading item is the main trading item for the security.
  • Tradable Item Currency: The currency of the tradable item.
  • Exchange Country: The country location of the exchange.
  • Period Date: The last day of the fiscal quarter the repurchase happened in (YYYY-MM-DD format).
  • Published At: When the figure first became public — the date the filing carrying it was filed. Use this rather than the period date when testing a strategy: US buyback figures arrive with the quarterly report, typically 40 to 45 days after the quarter ends.
  • Value: Cash spent repurchasing the company's own stock during the quarter, in the company's reporting currency.
  • Shares: Number of shares repurchased during the quarter, where reported.
  • Remaining Authorization: The value the company may still repurchase under its announced programmes, at the quarter end. A large announced programme with nothing left authorized is finished.
  • Source Ref: The filing accession the figure came from, and whether it was derived by differencing consecutive year-to-date totals.

Coverage and frequency

US filers, from roughly 2009. Figures are quarterly, because that is the finest granularity US disclosure provides: the SEC rule that would have required daily repurchase data was vacated by the Fifth Circuit in December 2023 and has not been re-proposed. Companies report these amounts cumulatively from the start of their fiscal year, so each quarter after the first is the difference between consecutive year-to-date totals; the source reference says which rows those are.

Region and window

Use region to select the universe (a region name, an ISO-2 country code, or ALL; defaults to US). from_date (required) and to_date (defaults to today) bound the period-date window, which may span at most 366 days. Results are ordered by period date, most recent first. The window is on the fiscal quarter (period date), as on the single-stock endpoint, not on when the figure became public: a recent window will fill in as quarterly filings arrive. For a point-in-time view, filter on publishedAt.

Identity and coverage

Buyback figures ORTEX could not match to a listing are not included: a row with no listing has no country to place it in a region by, so the feed is limited to well-mapped issuers. Delisted listings are included, but every row's identity columns (company name, ticker, ISIN and the ORTEX ids) are the listing's current values rather than those it carried on the event's date; ISIN is null where the listing no longer has an active ISIN.

Try it out! You can test the API with the trial key TEST. Simply include it in your request headers; either here, or add the header "Ortex-Api-Key": "TEST" to your http request.

Trial key restrictions: Trial keys may be limited to a specific date range and set of regions. Requests outside the allowed regions or entirely outside the allowed date range are rejected; a date window that partially overlaps the allowed range is trimmed to it, reported in meta.restriction.
