Free Float

API TraderAPI QuantAPI Developer

Track how a company's share capital has changed over time. This endpoint returns the total shares outstanding alongside the portion of them that actually trades freely, so you can size a position against the shares genuinely available rather than against the whole issued capital.

One row is returned per change. Each row states the values that took effect on its date and held until the next row, so a quiet period produces no rows rather than repeated identical ones. The first row is dated at the start of your requested window and carries the values that were already in effect when it opened.

Share counts are restated into today's capital structure by default, so a figure from before a split is directly comparable with a current one. Pass split_adjusted=false to receive the counts as they stood on the day, which is what you need to reconcile against a historical filing. The free float percentage is a ratio of two share counts, so a split moves both sides equally and it is unaffected either way.

Much of the older history comes from quarterly reports: each figure is dated at the end of the quarter it describes, but it was only published weeks later. That is the right date for reading the history, and the wrong one for a backtest, which would see each figure before the market could. Pass point_in_time=true to date every figure from when it could first have been known: the first report the company filed for a period covering that date, or 180 days after that date where no such report is on record. A figure that was overtaken by a newer one before it became known is left out, so the series never steps back to older information. Figures captured on the day they were published keep their date. Add min_lag_days to require a longer minimum delay on the late-published figures.

Available Data Points:

  • Date: The date these values took effect. (YYYY-MM-DD format).
  • Shares Outstanding: The total number of shares the company has issued.
  • Free Float Shares: The number of shares available for public trading, excluding closely held and otherwise restricted holdings.
  • Free Float Pct: Free float shares as a percentage of shares outstanding.

Try it out! You can test the API with the trial key TEST. Simply include it in your request headers; either here, or add the header "Ortex-Api-Key": "TEST" to your http request.

Trial key restrictions: Trial keys may be limited to a specific date range and set of regions. Requests outside the allowed regions or entirely outside the allowed date range are rejected; a date window that partially overlaps the allowed range is trimmed to it, reported in meta.restriction.

Path Params
string
required

Where to find the instrument: a venue (exchange symbol, MIC or ISO-2 country) or an identifier scheme (tid, sid, cid, isin, figi). See Identifying an instrument.

string
required

The ticker on that venue, or the value in that scheme. An ISIN, sid, cid or share-class FIGI answers for the main listing only; reference/listings lists the others. See Identifying an instrument.

Query Params
date
required

Inclusive start of the returned date window. Format: YYYY-MM-DD.

Also selects the instrument: the ticker resolves to the listing that held it on the exchange in the URL path on this date. To retrieve a delisted or renamed company, use its former exchange and ticker with a from_date from when it was listed. An identifier path (/stock/isin|figi|sid|cid/<value>/…) resolves at this date too. The instrument block in the response names the company the data belongs to.

date

Inclusive end of the returned date window (defaults to today). Format: YYYY-MM-DD.

boolean
Defaults to true

Whether share counts — and, on the closing-prices endpoints, prices and volumes — are adjusted to today's terms (default) or returned as-was on the data date. Pass false for unadjusted (as-was) values.

boolean
Defaults to false

Serve each value from the date it could first have been known, for backtesting without look-ahead. Historic quarterly values are dated at the period end but were published later; with true, each one starts at the first report the company filed for a period covering that date (or 180 days after it where no such report is on record), and a value superseded before it became known is left out. Values captured on the day they were published keep their date. Default false. Any other value returns 400 invalidPointInTime.

integer
Defaults to 0

With point_in_time=true, a minimum number of days between the date a historic value is about and the date it is served from, on top of its filing date. A whole number from 0 to 365; default 0. Values captured on the day they were published are not lagged. Returns 400 invalidMinLagDays when out of range, or when point_in_time is not true.

integer

Page number within the paginated result set. Must be >= 1. Defaults to 1.

integer

Number of rows per page. The default and the maximum allowed depend on the API tier; a value above the tier maximum is rejected with 400 invalidPageSize.

string
enum
Defaults to json

Response format. "json" (default) or "csv".
