Share Buybacks
What companies announce, and what they actually spend, kept side by side.
An announced buyback is a statement of intent. An executed one is cash leaving the balance sheet and shares leaving the float. ORTEX carries both: a global record of more than 237,000 buyback announcements and updates since 1989, and executed repurchases read from company filings, with the cash spent, the shares bought and the authorization still left. The gap between the two is where the signal lives.

What you can do with it
- Capital allocation. Who is buying back stock, how much, and whether they follow through.
- Float and supply. Shares leaving the float, for index, squeeze and ownership work.
- Event signals. New programs and accelerations, as they are announced.
Intent and execution, kept apart
Because a large share of announced programs are never fully bought.
- Announced programs, globally. Every new, extended, increased and completed program worldwide since 1989, with its size and dates.
- Executed repurchases. Cash spent in the period, shares bought and the value still authorized, read from company filings.
- Monthly detail. Beneath the quarterly totals, the month-by-month shares bought and the average price paid.
- Known when the market knew. Every figure is dated to the filing that revealed it, so a backtest only sees what was public on the day.
- Float impact. Repurchased shares can be canceled or held in treasury. ORTEX keeps the distinction, so a shrinking share count is real.
- On the corporate timeline. Buybacks sit on the same per-stock timeline as dividends, splits, deals and index changes.

Why ORTEX
Most buyback data stops at the announcement. ORTEX also reads what was actually spent from the filings and dates it to when the market learned it, so an unused program is visible straight away.
